I've been fortunate to work with two amazing models in the last few weeks: Eddie Sing, of Eddie Sing and the 31 Days; and Lita Cortez. On the face of it, they couldn't be more different -- Eddie is a larger-than-life musician, and Lita is a petite rockabilly girl -- but both gave me amazing sessions, and both were an absolute pleasure to work with. Photos of both appear in my Portraits and Art pages. Enjoy.
NEW "OFFICE OBJECTS" PHOTOS COMING SOON
The Raich Ende Malter collection was gracious enough to permit me to photograph my oldest typewriter yet -- a Hammond curved typewriter from the 1890s. It's a beautiful piece of design, in mint condition. I'll post a few pictures soon and update the Office Objects page here.
MOVING TO WESTBURY
After five wonderful years in the village of Mineola, my partner Chris and I bought a house in neighboring Westbury. The down side is that we won't be living in an urban neighborhood anymore -- we won't have several terrific ethnic restaurants in a five-block radius! -- but the up side is that we won't be living in an urban neighborhood anymore -- no noisy upstairs neighbors and (we hope) no sirens at all hours of the night!
The real up side, of course, is that we now have a home of our own, to do with as we see fit. Including a studio for my photography. It's a huge third-floor room with a big semicircular window for abundant natural light. Tons of storage space for my equipment, and plenty of blank wall for backdrops.
I couldn't be happier!

March 2015 - New Work in Mineola
I'm excited to report that selections from my new series, "Playing - Doing - Learning," will be on display at the Mineola Public Library March 2 - 30, 2015.
These photos are candid shots of children and young adults engaged in experiential learning -- experimenting with musical instruments, cooking from a recipe, comparing leaves, etc. The candid shots are interspersed with portraits of Mineola kids at the library's Children's Reading Room. It's a fun project -- I hope you'll be able to catch it while it's up.
Photos from last year's show "Office Objects" will also be on display, in case you missed it in Huntington.

In search of child models
In March of 2015, the Mineola Public Library will be hosting two of my shows in its downstairs galleries: "Office Objects" and another, of my choosing. I'd like to create a second show that consists entirely of children (ages toddler to teen) reading or engaging in experiential learning. Do you know a child who might be open to modeling? Contact me here.
Long Island Ice Cream Tour
On Saturday, August 16, Chris and I went on the Long Island Ice Cream Tour. It's a tour of shops that make their own ice cream, starting from the East End of Long Island and ending just outside Queens. We were only able to make four of the eight stops, but the ice cream and the company were both exquisite! Most of the tour-goers were college age, and they were charming and funny and wonderful. You can see some photos of them (but not the ice cream) here.

"Office Objects" comes to Mineola
Good news if you miss "Office Objects" at the Center for Photographic Art in Huntington this summer -- the show will reprise at the Walter & Joan Hobbs Art Gallery at the Mineola Public Library March 1 - 31, 2015. An opening reception is tentatively scheduled for the evening of Monday, March 2.
It's exciting to have my work on display right here in the town where I live. If you're in the area, please stop by.
"Office Objects" in Huntington, NY
For the past year, I've been lucky enough to have access to a huge private collection of vintage typewriters and other business machines from the last century. Typewriters, calculators, check writers, and cashiers from a time when office machines were designed to be ornamental, as well as functional.
Nearly all of the photographs are in rich black and white, though the central image used to promote the show is (barely) in color.
If you happen to be visiting Long Island this summer, please stop by the Center for Photographic Art at 22 Clinton Avenue, Huntington, and be sure to say hello to the Center's charming and eminently capable director, Ashlee. It's a lovely area, with many galleries and cafes in easy walking distance.
The ten images can be viewed here. All framed photos are available for sale, as well; please contact info@centerforphotographicart.com for a price list.
Big Apple BBQ
As you may know, Chris and I are big fans of authentic Austin-style barbecue. We love attending the Big Apple BBQ, a yearly event in which the whole of Madison Square Park is converted into a huge smoke pit where pit masters from all over the country convene to serve some of their finest barbecue. Dry-rub brisket, Andouille sausage, pulled pork sandwiches, and St. Louis-style ribs were all present and accounted for. Before you check out the photos, grab a napkin -- you'll be drooling.
NPR, TMBG, JoCo, and AMA at BAM
Is that enough acronyms for you? National Public Radio hosted a week of live recordings of some of its most popular programs at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Chris and I attended the recording of "Ask Me Another," which featured musical genius Jonathan Coulton and musical geniuses They Might Be Giants.
I snapped a couple photos of the musical guests early in the evening. See them here.
Scrabble for Cheaters Photos
Thanks to all who helped us raise money. Amy Stephenson and I, competing as "Team A Squared," came in second place, and won some nifty prizes, too. The real winners, of course, are the thousand-plus kids aged 6-18 who benefit from 826NYC's after school programs, tutoring, and creative workshops, provided for FREE, thanks to the nice people who donate.
I got some fun photos of the event, which included a few minor celebrities (Robyn Goldwasser, Jon Parker, Jonathan Marc Sherman, and more). You can see them here.
Help me cheat at Scrabble (it's okay, it's for kids!)
Another year, another opportunity for my pal Amy Stephenson and me to compete in 826NYC's "Scrabble for Cheaters" as Team A Squared! This is a unique fundraiser in which two-person teams raise money. The money we raise is used to purchase "cheats" to help us win in Scrabble games against other players. (You can see Amy and me with our friends Margit Detweiler and Maggie Rowe at the 2012 Scrabble for Cheaters tournament here.)
This year's tournament takes place Saturday, May 3rd. If you'd like to help us raise funds for a terrific cause, donate here!
NECSS (Northeastern Conference on Science and Skepticism)
What a weekend! Chris and I attended the Northeastern Conference on Science and Skepticism (NECSS, pronounced "nexus") in New York City. I helped my fellow presenters from the "Skeptical Connections" podcast conduct a workshop on Friday, and the rest of the weekend was spent watching and listening to famous physicists, astronauts, scientists, podcasters, and GMO researchers (and even meeting some of them). It was an eye-opening weekend.
There were a lot of pro photographers at the event. I took photos, too; you can find them here.
NY Theremin Orchestra Concert
It happened! Last night, a group of fellow amateur thereminists (me, included) joined Dorit Chrysler and Rob Schwimmer to perform two pieces in concert! The first, "Icelandic Volcano," is an evocative mini-symphony in four parts, conducted by Dorit. The second was an improvisational piece directed by Rob. It was a magical experience, and of course I got a few nice shots, which can be seen here.
Jessica Greco
Jessica is a young chef who's starting a new business: she'll come to your home and teach you to prepare fantastic meals, using fresh, easily accessible ingredients. I spent yesterday afternoon in an apartment in Great Neck, NY, watching her show a group of friends how to make some amazing food. I took photos for her website, and best of all, I got to drink wine and eat some of the many dishes they whipped up. To see some of these goodies, please check out my Culinary page, and look for everything tagged Jessica Greco.
Theremin Workshop
Yesterday, I attended the NY Theremin Society's first workshop, held at Pioneerworks, in Brooklyn, NY. It was a good opportunity to learn a little more about my instrument and meet other thereminists. The workshop was conducted by Dorit Chrysler, Rob Schwimmer, and Charlie Hobbs. We learned to play separate parts of a musical work called "Icelandic Volcano," and -- woohoo! -- we'll be performing it at a concert on March 29! I got some good photos during the breaks. You can see them here.
"ONE ON ONE: 826NYC's 10th Anniversary Chat Spectacular"
Chris and I attended a wonderful celebration last night of 826NYC and all the great work they've done for the past decade. The event was at Town Hall, and featured celebrities interviewing other celebrities. We had terrific front-row balcony seats, so I was fortunate to have a great vantage point for some photos. Click here to see.
